Rabbi Yosef Chaim, the spiritual shepherd of the Jews of Iraq in the second half of the nineteenth century, writes in his classic work, Ben Ish Chai (Drushim, Parshat Pinchas):

When economic difficulty afflicts a generation, the first step should be to investigate the sin of promiscuity ( znut); for this sin, more than all others, reduces prosperity.
